Candidates & Seats

Candidates were nominated between March 21–April 10, 2016. The Senate’s Nominations & Elections Committee reviewed these nominees for eligibility within their respective categories; ineligible and invalid nominees were removed, as well as the names of those who declined nomination in writing.

Academic Senate

The Academic Senate meets monthly during the fall and spring semesters. Senators are expected to

  • solicit the opinions of their constituents,
  • inform their constituents of significant information,
  • attend monthly Senate meetings, and
  • serve routinely on Senate committees.

Senators serve three-year terms (starting July 1 following elections), and there is no term limit. Runners-up are alternates within their respective categories.

There are two categories of senators: departmental and at-large.

Departmental Senators

Each department has at least one senator, chosen by and from its faculty members (full- or part-time) and staff (who hold faculty rank or teach in the department). Large departments (>60 faculty) have one additional seat. If you are a member of multiple departments, you may nominate within each department.

Full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and staff can nominate themselves or other faculty or staff and can vote for these seats. Others are not eligible.

At-Large Senators

Each group of Senate constituents has its own, at-large representatives:

  • full-time faculty (5 seats, no more than one per department)
  • part-time faculty (5 seats, no more than one per department)
  • chairs, assistant chairs, and equivalent academic-administrative titles (5 seats, no more than one per school)
  • staff who hold faculty rank or teach (1 seat)

Each constituent can nominate and vote within their own category only.

Academic Policy Committee

The Senate’s Academic Policy Committee

  • reviews new/revised academic policies and procedures;
  • recommends the development of new academic policies and procedures;
  • maintains the Faculty Handbook (in coordination with the Provost); and
  • examines the quality, content, and educational goals of academic policies and procedures

The Committee makes recommendations to the Senate and elects its own chair, which requires confirmation by the Senate. The Committee meets at least once per semester, more often depending on workload.

The Academic Policy Committee has 5–9 voting members drawn from Senate constituents in graduate & undergraduate departments (no more than one per department) and each school and the Library (to the extent possible). A majority of the members are faculty, at least 2 are chairs (or equivalent), and no more than 5 are senators. Committee members serve one-year terms (without limit).

Any Senate constituent can nominate others or self-nominate and can vote for this committee. Nominees need not be senators.

  • advises and supports department and school curriculum committees; and
  • conducts periodic assessment of the quality of curriculum review across the Institute.

The Committee makes recommendations to the Provost and elects its own chair, which requires confirmation by the Senate. The Committee meets at least once per semester, more often depending on workload.

The Institute Curriculum Committee has 5–13 voting members drawn from Senate constituents in graduate & undergraduate departments (no more than one per department) and each school and the Library (to the extent possible). A majority of the members are faculty, at least 2 are chairs (or equivalent), and no more than 7 are senators. Committee members serve one-year terms (without limit).

Any Senate constituent can nominate others or self-nominate and can vote for this committee. Nominees need not be senators.
