Kevin Gatta
Distinguished Teacher 1997–98
Kevin Gatta is a tenured professor in the Graduate Communications & Package Design department at Pratt Institute where he is the former Assistant Chair. He also taught the highly regarded Senior Project course in the undergraduate COMD Department as well as one day workshops for the Professional Studies Program in “Foundations of Graphic Design”. His tenure at Pratt has been since 1981. Kevin has guest lectured at art colleges across the region including the Royal College of Art in London.
He has co-authored and designed the text Foundations of Graphic Design published in the Fall of 1990. He authored a teacher’s edition published in March of 1994. All published by Davis Art Series through Davis Publications.
Kevin was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1957. He attended Rhode Island College, receiving a B.A. degree in Fine Arts and Art History in 1979. After studying in Pietrasanta, Italy, he attended Pratt Institute in New York City where he earned an M.S. degree in Communications Design in 1981. While attending Pratt Institute, Kevin joined Herb Lubalin Associates as an associate designer. He later worked with Seymour Chwast and Alan Peckolick at The Pushpin Group, Inc. as senior designer from 1981 to 1988. During that time he worked on projects for the Pushpin affiliate: David Pocknell & Co. in Essex, England during the summer of 1984. He founded Gatta Design & Co. in 1988.
