Posted on September 27, 2016

The Academic Senate seeks nominations for honorary degree candidates, as well as two anticipated committee chair positions: Distinguished Teacher Award Committee and Faculty Development Fund Committee.

Background on these positions is below. Senate constituents (faculty, chairs, assistant chairs, and staff who teach) are eligible to nominate. Please refer to specific eligibility rules for the positions below.

All nominations are due to nominations@prattsenate.org by Monday, October 17 at 11:59pm. Please include nominations, rationales for selection (max. 500 words), and any links to online information regarding each nominee (e.g., bio, CV, website). The Senate will elect its honorary degree candidate nominee(s) and anticipated committee chairs from among the pools of nominees received.

Please contact nominations@prattsenate.org with questions about these positions or nominations.

Honorary Degree Candidates

The Senate, together with other areas of the Institute, has been asked to nominate candidates to receive honorary degrees, awarded each year at commencement. Nominees are evaluated by the Board Academic Affairs Committee (AAC), and, if approved by the AAC, candidates remain in the approved candidate pool for up to three years.

It is strongly recommended that each group put forward a diverse group of nominees (race, gender, ethnicity, etc.) to ensure that Pratt honors candidates from a global perspective, as well as nominees reflecting the diversity of creative practices.

Please do not to approach or inform any nominees directly. Institutional Advancement will approach nominees should they be approved as candidates by the AAC. Candidates nominated and approved this year may be considered during any of the three succeeding years, so you are nominating individuals for the pool, not necessarily for receipt of a degree at the 2017 graduation ceremonies.

For a copy of the procedures and listing of previous awardees, log into my.pratt.edu and go to the Pratt Policies/Provost/Honorary Degrees.

Please send your nominations, rationales for selection (max. 500 words), and any links to online information regarding each nominee (e.g., bio, CV, website) to prattsenate@gmail.com by Monday, October 17, 2016 at 11:59pm. Senate constituents (faculty, chairs, assistant chairs, and staff who teach) are eligible to nominate though the Senate. Distinguished Teacher Award Committee Chair (*anticipated)

The Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA) recognizes exceptional dedication to Pratt’s mission and applauds the accomplishments made over the course of a career. The Distinguished Teacher is nominated by students and the Award is conferred by the Academic Senate, the Administration, and the Board of Trustees. The recipient usually addresses the student body at Honors Convocation, presents the mace at commencement ceremonies, and delivers a lecture for the Institute community. For more information on past work of the Distinguished Teacher Award Committee, please see http://prattsenate.org/committees/distinguished-teacher-award.

The DTA Committee Chair is responsible for recruiting members of the committee (to be elected by the Senate), convening meetings of the committee, coordinating its activities, making reports to the Senate, and serving as a voting member of the Senate’s Steering Committee. The chair serves a one-year term, renewable without limit.

* Standing Rules describing the DTA Committee and chair compensation are currently being considered by the Senate, to be voted on at its October 18 meeting, at which time the committee chair would also be elected. Under the current proposal, only faculty members may chair the committee, and the historical and proposed compensation for the committee chair is $3,600. Compensation would be awarded under the terms of the Senate Compensation Policy, which includes the option of release time for full-time faculty.
